Sierra Madre: City Living in the Village of the Foothills
With a spectacular backdrop of the San Gabriel Mountains, the Californian city of Sierra Madre is also referred to as the “Wistaria City”. This affectionate term has arisen from the existence of a Guinness World Record holding Wistaria vine plant on W. Carter Avenue. Sierra Madre, announced as a winner of the All-America City award in 2007, lies between Pasadena and Altadena to the west and Arcadia to the east and south. 
HISTORY AND CURRENT DEMOGRAPHICS
Following a long and rich history involving settlement by the indigenous Tongva tribe and later Spanish settlement, the city of Sierra Madre was incorporated in February 1907. The city joined the Pasadena Unified School District in 1961. According to the 2010 United States Census, the population of Sierra Madre is around 11,000 people. The racial makeup of the area at the time of the census was 82.1% White, 7.6% Asian, 1.8% African-American, with small numbers of people from other races making up the difference. The average age of residents is 46 years and there is a slightly biased female to male ratio.
MAIN ATTRACTIONS IN SIERRA MADRE
The annual Vine Festival honors the infamous Wistaria vine plant for which the city is best known. Planted in 1894, the vine is the world’s largest flowering plant. Covering approximately one acre, it is estimated that the fragrant plant has 1.5 million blossoms, weighs 250 tons and has branches over 500 feet in length. The festival occurs in March when the plant is in full bloom. The Memorial Park on Sierra Madre Blvd. plays host to the annual Concerts in the Park season. Beginning in July each year, free concerts are provided by local community groups on eight consecutive Sundays. Residents sit in front of the Memorial Park Bandshell to enjoy the music. The Mt. Wilson Trail, accessible from E Mira Monte Avenue, is a popular hiking trail among residents and visitors alike. The winding seven-mile trail to the 5,715 foot summit affords hikers stunning views of Little Santa Anita Canyon.

- Each Spring, Family Movie Fridays sees local families gather in Kersting Court to watch outdoor movies. This Friday evening event is managed by the Community Services Department. – Pinney House on North Lima Street is one of last few remaining examples of carriage trade hotels in the area. The house has recently been renovated and awarded permission to be used as a bed and breakfast. Despite its change in use, it remains an important cultural landmark in Sierra Madre. – Members of the Sierra Madre Women’s’ Club meet throughout September to May to plan events for the local community. Women of all ages and background are welcome to join. – The Bailey Canyon Wilderness Park on W. Carter Avenue with its native botanical area, fire ring and winding hiking trails is a popular spot for picnics. – The Sierra Vista Park on Sierra Madre Blvd. provides a range of recreational activities for residents of all ages. Facilities include a youth activity centre, aquatic centres, dog parks, a covered pavilion, courts for tennis, basketball and volleyball, and the Sierra Madre Rose Float Barn. – Sierra Madre hosts an annual Independence Day parade accompanied by three full days of festivities. Known as the “Star Spangled Weekend” by locals, confetti eggs are thrown at visitors to the event. – Local residents are able to stay informed of all the latest community news by visiting the official city website (cityofsierramadre.com) for up-to-date information.
