San Gabriel is a city just South of Pasadena which is bordered by San Marino to the North, Temple City and Rosemead on the East, Rosemead on the South and Alhambra to its West. It is home to one of the original Spanish missions in California and is named after the Mission San Gabriel Arcángel. 2000 census shows San Gabriel being home to 39,804 people, 12,587 households, and 9,566 families. The census also shows 12,909 housing units consisting of single family residences, condominiums, townhomes, PUDs, and apartment buildings. As far as real estate is concerned, North San Gabriel with zip code 91775 is considered more exclusive since it’s closer to San Marino California and is known for great elementary schools like Coolidge Elementary. South San Gabriel is a little less expensive and has more affordable housing. It’s closer to the 10 freeway and offers convenient access to downtown Los Angeles and Cal State LA.
History
San Gabriel is rich in history. It is the oldest settlement in Los Angeles County and the second oldest community in all of California after San Diego. San Gabriel lies in the San Gabriel Valley in the shadow of the San Gabriel Mountains. All three took their names from Mission San Gabriel Arcangel, the fourth of twenty-one missions established by the Spanish in the late eighteenth century and the seed of present-day San Gabriel. Mission San Gabriel left a permanent imprint in Southern California. The arrival of Spanish missionaries permanently displaced the area’s Native American inhabitants, but also permanently influenced the future of California, stimulating what would prove to be a rich agricultural industry.
Points of Interest
San Gabriel grew to be the “Pride of the Missions” and supplied many of the other Missions and settlements with the necessities of life from its lands which stretched from the ocean to the mountains and east to the Riverside area. This is why San Gabriel is known as the “birthplace of the Los Angeles region.” It was from San Gabriel Mission that 44 people in 11 families left on September 4 ,1781 to found El Pueblo de la Reina de Los Angeles. Outside the Mission church door is El Camino Real Bell marking the King’s Highway that linked all the Missions in California. To the north is the Mission Cemetery where members of many pioneer families are buried. Mission is open from 9:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. daily, except major holidays . The Old Grapevine
The Old Grapevine holds a small segment of the original vine whose trellised branches once covered 10,000 square feet. It was a popular local gathering place where refreshments were served under the vine. Started as a cutting from the “Mother Vine” at the Mission, many local vineyards began from cuttings of this vine. L.J. Rose of Sunnyslope Ranch, just north and east of San Gabriel, started with such cuttings and grafted on many varieties of grapes new to this area. He later helped begin many a vineyard in Northern California. The San Gabriel Winery was among the worlds’s largest in the late 1800’s, until a blight wiped out the vineyards and oranges became the main agricultural crop of the area. Today the park is once again a popular place for weddings, parties and social gatherings.

Grapevine Arbor
I love walking down the mission district and seeing the bride and grooms take the most beautiful photos in front of the Grapevine Arbor. The Grapevine Arbor’s beautiful Spanish style architecture and lush garden provide the perfect setting for weddings, receptions, or that very special event. Planted in 1861, the famous Grapevine Arbor gives this picturesque locale its name. Guests often combine the nearby Padillo Room, Grapevine Room & Grapevine Park to accommodate the elegance, privacy & size required for their gathering. The Padillo and Grapevine Rooms can accommodate 98 and 87 guests, respectively. Outdoor events held in nearby Grapevine Park can accommodate up to 220 guests. Tables and chairs are available for a nominal fee. Guests may provide caterer, music, etc. Champagne and wine are the only types of alcohol permitted. For more information please contact the San Gabriel Parks and Recreation office at (626) 308-2875, located at 250 South Mission Drive San Gabriel 91776. The Grapevine Arbor is located at 324 South Mission Drive, San Gabriel 91776. The city of San Gabriel has put together a wonderful walking tour, click here for the brochure of the walking tour.

San Gabriel Valley Music Theatre – This theatre, located in the Mission District, is trying to preserve and show the American Art form of Musical Theatre. The San Gabriel Mission Playhouse is where the Musicals come alive!

History of the playhouse: The playhouse was built on March 5, 1927 by a man named John Steven McGroarty. His famous production was called “Mission Play,” which told a breathtaking story of the founding of the California Missions. Once his play deceased, a couple years later the playhouse at one point served as a movie theatre, and during the house-shortages during the war years it was also turned into apartments! During the 1940’s the San Gabriel Community wanted to buy the playhouse. At first they were apposed in1945, but later in the year they were approved. Today the auditorium is used for our entertainment. Aside from minor changes through the years, the playhouse looks almost the same as it did all the way back when “Mission Play” was still in production!
