RISE of the Jack O’Lanterns!

RISE of the Jack O’Lanterns!

Halloween is just around the corner and at Descanso Gardens in La Canada Flintridge a spectacular presentation of pumpkin carving artistry will take place starting this weekend! More than 5,000 carved pumpkins will be displayed on a quarter mile scenic trail. Bring your family to see these masterpieces appear in an orange glow in the dark night. This year the Jack O’Lanterns are arranged in different exciting themes including some famous sports icons, TV stars, city skylines and even life-sized dinosaurs! There are plenty of weekends to choose from and  below is some more detailed information.

The story behind Jack O’ Lanterns.

The name derives from the phenomenon of strange light flickering over peat bogs called jack o’lantern and the stories are found in Irish folklore that dates centuries back. From the Irish myth began a tradition of carving scary faces into turnips and potatoes which were placed by the windows and doors to scare away Stingy Jack and other evil spirits. Irish and Scottish immigrants brought the tradition to the U.S. and today it’s a countrywide (and even spreading globally) tradition at Halloween to carve out different faces using pumpkins.
