Visit six museums all for FREE on May 15!!
Interested in climbing into an LAPD helicopter, learn Victorian dances or see backsmithing and woodworking demonstrations? All this and much more can be experienced during MOTA, Museum of the Arroyo Day, between 12 pm and 5 pm! Included are museums in Pasadena and Los Angeles. We recommend that you plan your day, as these places are all very interesting, but there is only so much time. 🙂
The National Historic Landmark and majestic 1908 Gamble house, is the perfect example of a Arts & Crafts masterpiece. See the amazing details that was put into building this gem, designed by the Green and Green brothers. Check out the newly restored gardens and learn about the plants and materials used in the restoration. Kids will have a chance to do crafts and join a planting workshop.
For traditional woodcarving demonstrations, head over to the Heritage Square. Docents will be in costumes leading the tours of the historical houses. Your kids can enjoy playing with Victorian toys, do crafts, play and learn about plants and flowers in the Ford House Kitchen garden.
Perhaps you’d like to catch the exhibition Crossing the Atlantic Quilt by Quilt, featuring 30 quilts on display, at the Pasadena Historic Museum?! Be sure to also see Strings Attached: Tradition Meets Contemporary Woven Art, which highlights the work of the Bobbinwinders Guild, who combine modern and historical techniques of weaving and design. Your entire family can participate in hands-on craft activities. Make sure not to miss the remodeled Fenyes Mansion as well as the Finnish Folk Museum which is housed in a replica of a 19th Century Finnish farmhouse.
At the Los Angeles Police Museum you can tour the facilities which feature private collections and historical memorabilia that date back to the late 1800s, experience a real jail cell and snap your own free police booking photos. Kids can climb into a retired police helicopter.
Take self-guided tours at the hidden Lummis home and gardens. A fine arts market will be set up on the grounds featuring the work of Native American jewelers, painters, sculptors and fiber artists of both traditional and modern styles. Children can play games and do art project as well.
Tour the exhibition Four Centuries of Pueblo Pottery, which features more than 100 pieces of rare ceramics, and explore the community garden overlooking the Arroyo Seco at The Autry’s Historic Southwest Museum Mt. Washington Campus. You’ll also be able to take a self-guided tour and view a traditional cordage demonstration using native plants.
Free shuttles are available connecting all museums, so you can park your car and enjoy the arts, culture and history of the Arroyo. Have fun!!!
