Day 27: Pasadena Police Department carries the Special Olympic Torch

Day 27 of 365 Things To Do In Pasadena™ invites you to be on the lookout today…

The Special Olympics torch is making its way to Pasadena! The torch is traveling 1,500 miles through 300 communities as local, state and federal law-enforcement officers carry the torch from one city police department and  hand it over to officers in the next as a way to raise funds for the Southern California Special Olympics.

Our Pasadena Police officers will receive the torch Wednesday, June 9th at 1:30 p.m. from the U.S. Postal Service Inspection Office and will run it south on Garfield Avenue to Colorado Boulevard, continuing east to Sierra Madre Boulevard, and turning south to Huntington Drive. Here they will then pass the torch off to the San Marino Police officers.

The Southern California Special Olympics will be held June 12th & 13th at California State University-Long Beach.

A kick-off to the 2010 Summer Games will be held at Pacific Pier in Santa Monica on Thursday, June 1oth from 5:00-11:00 p.m.

Participating in this years summer games are 1,100  athletes from 11 counties. They will be competing in events such as:  aquatics, track and field, basketball, bocce, golf and gymnastics.

There are many ways we here in Pasadena can contribute to this effort! We can show our support by meeting  at the steps of the Pasadena Police Department and cheering on our Pasadena police officers, ordering event t-shirts ($20) or making a donation to the Special Olympics of Southern California.

Together, we can raise awareness and support for this wonderful community event.

We, at PasadenaViews, would like to wish all the athletes a fun and prosperous Olympic Games!!

Do you know an athlete competing at the 2010 Summer Olympics? We would love for you to share their story with us!
