Day 359: Elements Cafe

Elements Cafe has been on my Pasadena bucket list for awhile now after hearing fantastic reviews and finally, last week, I was able to carve out some time to stop there for lunch.  Situated on the corner of Fair Oaks and Dayton Street just a block away from Old Pasadena, the cafe was a bit of a surprise for me.  Carrying a botanical theme throughout, the open space, exposed brick and family style tables makes this for a cozy and comfortable space.

This is not a restaurant you’d visit for quiet, private conversations, but a great place to meet new people and enjoy fresh and unique flavor combinations.

My friend and I stopped by around 12:30 pm and the place was packed, but we waited only a few minutes and were led to a table towards the back of the restaurant.  By the way all their tables seat about 8 to 10 people so do not be surprised to be seated next to someone you don’t know.  The menu was simple and elegant.  Soups and salads on one side and sandwiches on the other.

All sandwiches are served with an organic salad or house chips.  I ordered Cuban Style Pulled Pork with Sweet Fried Plantains served on EuroPane Baguette.  My friend ordered Korean Marinated Steak Sandwich with house made Kimchi and Pickled Ginger.  We both ordered our sandwiches with their salad which was lightly dressed in vinaigrette. The portions are large and the sandwiches were cut in half – perfect for sharing, which we did!

I loved, absolutely loved the Korean Marinated Steak Sandwich.  The flavors were absolutely fantastic.   I am not a huge ginger fan, but the marinade was amazing and it was totally transformed in this sandwich.  I enjoyed the Pulled Pork and the Plantains made for a perfect dessert.

The lady next to me ordered a Mac and Cheese and it was absolutely perfect looking.  She was thoroughly enjoying each and every bite.  It is on my “to order” list for next visit.

Elements Cafe serves breakfast and offers a weekend brunch menu.

The only downside is the parking situation.  Parking is hard to find on the street and you should expect to either pay $5 at a lot next door or park a few blocks away at a Pasadena Public Parking Structure (keep in mind that only the first 90 minutes are free.)
