Boston Court Performing Arts CenterJust down the street from the Ice House finds our day 71 of 365 Things To Do In Pasadena™ – Boston Court Theatre!

Boston Court Performing Arts Center is a non-profit organization, dedicated to presenting works that are creative, bold and daring.  Their mission statement states that they “strive to challenge the audiences of Pasadena and the San Gabriel Valley”.

A small (only 99 seats), intimate venue and bold and daring productions, make this little known Pasadena Theatre, a place to check out.   The building itself is modern and top notch with comfortable lobby area with seating.  There’s a concession stand and plenty to do both before and after the show… it’s Pasadena after all!

Today was the premiere of “The Good Book of Pedantry and Wonder” by Moby Pomerance directed by John Langs.  The show will run through August 29th.

This show is a witty take on a daunting endeavor.  James Murray is a decade into the creation of the Oxford English Dictionary.  As his mind begins to unravel his children must decide who takes responsibility for the old man and the thousands of slips of paper that contain his life’s work.

September 27, 2011 Pasadena, CA – The Theatre @ Boston Court announces the upcoming 2012 season of all world premiere plays. The season kicks off in the winter with “The Treatment,” a collaboration with Theatre Movement Bazaar on an adaptation of the Anton Chekov story “Ward 6.” The spring production is the World Premiere of “The Children” by Michael Elyanow.  The summer brings a co-production with Furious Theatre Company on a World Premiere adaptation of Nikolai Gogol’s “The Government Inspector.”  The season closes in the fall with the World Premiere of “Creation,” by Kathryn Walat.  All productions will appear on the Main Stage at Boston Court Performing Arts Center, 70 North Mentor Avenue.

Opening February 25, 2012 is the World Premiere of “The Treatment,” an adaptation of Chekhov’s story, “Ward 6.” This production is a collaboration between The Theatre @ Boston Court and Theatre Movement Bazaar.  Conceived by Alger + Kronis, text by Richard Alger, directed and choreographed by Tina Kronis. Who draws the line between sanity and insanity?In this new work of visceral, movement-based storytelling, the complacent doctor of a remote mental hospital befriends a philosophizing madman, but as the doctor’s worldview is upended, society’s prescription is to make him a patient in his own ward. Chekhov’s investigation of people in positions of power and those they hold captive ignites with intense physicality fused with ironic humor, dance, and song.

Opening May 12, 2012 is the World Premiere of Michael Elyanow’s “The Children,” directed by The Theatre @ Boston Court’s Co-Artistic Director, Jessica Kubzansky. What if a character from “Medea” wrested the children away from their mother’s murderous intent, accidentally transporting them to present-day Maine in the middle of a hurricane? The Children is a layered, Rubik’s Cube of a story, rich with comedy, passion and pain. Is that the modern-day sheriff or Jason, Medea’s husband? Will these children grow up to overcome their horrific childhoods? Wild theatricality, myth, and puppetry combine to tell an eerily moving story of survival and healing.

Opening July 28, 2012 is a co-production with Furious Theatre Company on a Word Premiere Adaptation of Gogol’s “The Government Inspector,” adapted by Oded Gross, directed by Stefan Novinski. The corrupt, self-seeking officials of a small town in Tzarist Russia mistake a penniless clerk for a Government Inspector, and chaos, recrimination, and retribution ensue. This classic satire on human vanity and the corruption of elected officials is more relevant today than ever. Re-envisioned as a cutting, tragic farce with influences from Monty Python and “Brazil,” this painful, hilarious investigation of people’s characters gone to seed makes for hysterical comedy with a good dose of soul.

Opening October 15, 2012 and closing the season is “Creation,” a World Premiere by Kathryn Walat, directed by The Theatre @ Boston Court’s Co-Artistic Director, Michael Michetti. When Sarah’s husband, Ian, an evolutionary biologist, is struck by lightning and suffers a near-death experience, he develops an obsession with music. This strange new twist in their formerly ordered lives sends them to seek answers from others about the ways in which people transform, and whether a marriage can endure such monumental change. Four lives unexpectedly entwine as they wrestle with the mysteries of the human mind and heart, the alchemy of the creative process, and that single spark that can change it all.

Each play previews for six performances prior to its opening date and runs for four weeks, Thursdays through Saturdays at 8 p.m., and Sundays at 2 p.m.  Season memberships are available now through www.BostonCourt.org or by calling 626-683-6883.  A special season discount is available through December 31, 2011.
