Day 251: Personal Fitness Training

Many of us made resolutions to start out the New Year healthier and more fit. Day 251 of 365 Things To Do In Pasadena focuses on personal training and its benefits. I’ve interviewed one of the best personal trainers in the Pasadena area – Katina Weaver – to give us some insight as to what hiring a personal fitness trainer is about.

I met Katina when I started working out at Women’s World in San Marino. Her encouragement and happy demeanor made my exercise classes fun and comfortable. Later, I found out that Katina also offers private and semi-private sessions at ProFitness Network in Pasadena.

Why should I work out with a personal trainer? There are many reasons why people choose to hire a trainer. Personal training is great for those who may need motivation or that extra push they don’t get by working out alone. Many times people work out and never see results. A personal trainer will design an individualized program to fit goals, age, and your individual body type. Sometimes, people work out every day and have hit a plateau. A personal trainer can help you break through your plateaus and achieve your goals. Weight loss, safety and if you’re new to exercise are additional reasons to hire a trainer.

What can I expect to be different by having a personal trainer vs taking classes in a gym? A trainer will individualize your workout whereas in a class of 30 people, a fitness instructor doesn’t have time for that in an hour.

What should I expect from our first session together? The first session will be a fitness assessment. I’ll find out your current fitness level and goals that you have. My basic assessment consists of a body composition test which measure lean body mass, cardio endurance and muscular endurance which consists of push up test and a flexibility sit and reach test.

How many people are in semi privates? I like to have no more than 3 people with an hour. Although it’s semi-private training, no one is doing the same exercises. The workouts are still catered to your fitness level. And yes, the benefits are still the same, the only difference is that I’m walking around to clients checking form, and instructing each client on what their exercise is next. My clients love the fact they get a personalized session with only paying a fraction of the cost of personal training session.

Do you recommend combining a personal training program with other exercises or activities and if so, which ones? I tell my clients that have weight loss goals that if they want to see more results than they need to up the cardio. They can take an aerobics class, treadmill, elliptical, or go for a brisk walk. The key is to move and expend more calories that you take in.

Tell us a little bit about yourself Katina and how you started in the personal training arena? I have been in the fitness business for over 10 years. I started out teaching spin and it evolved from that. I’ve been a personal trainer for 5 years and I love what I do. It gives me such joy to be a part of my clients’ success. And when my clients hit their goals, it gives me such joy that I’m a part of helping them change their lives. Making a difference motivates me and I love what I do.
