Oak Tree Inn in South Pasadena was one of the first Chinese restaurants I went to when we first moved into the Pasadena area. That was almost 30 years ago! Oak Tree Inn is still one of my favorites. It’s located on Fair Oaks, just a few blocks away from South Pasadena High School and across the street from the South Pasadena Middle School.
I was first drawn to the restaurant because of its contemporary style and a bit of a trendier take on the Chinese cuisine. Oak Tree Inn served Walnut Shrimp before P.F. Chang’s and always managed to have a nice combination of classic Chinese dishes with a bit of a twist. Recently renovated (yes… it was definitely time), Oak Tree Inn offers an inviting interior painted in cream and brown with touches of red here and there.
Quite spacious with two dining areas – one with smaller tables for four and the one in the back for larger parties – lots of floor to ceiling windows and great service. I swear that most of the wait staff are still the same from the first time I visited.
Some of my favorite dishes include Deep Fried Whole Fish, Scramble Eggs with Shrimp, Shrimp with Tender Greens. My family loves House Special Beef, Fried Dumplings, their Won Ton and Hot & Sour Soups – both are fantastic, and if you feel like veggies, I highly recommend Hot Braised String Beans.
If you like crustaceans, you can pick your own crab or lobster from their live aquarium.
To round the meal out, add one of their special bar drinks.
Lunch is served between 11 am and 3 pm and comes with hot tea, steamed rice and soup. Lunches run between $5.75 and $6.25. Dinner specials run around $14 per plate.
