Day 182: Kabuki Japanese Restaurant

We talked about sushi here on 365 Things To Do In Pasadena before.  I love Japanese food, so you can imagine how excited I was to find out that I won a gift card from Kabuki, a Japanese Restaurant, after attending Best of Pasadena with my friends from the Starr House.

Victor and I braved Old Pasadena on a Friday night and made it to Kabuki around 7 pm.  We didn’t have to wait long, maybe 5 minutes, and were lucky to get a nice booth towards the back of the restaurant.  The atmosphere was very casual… surprisingly there were lots of families with kids.  Everyone seemed to be having a great time and enjoying their food.  Conversation was flowing and laughter was in the air.

As we were led to our table, I was really impressed by the friendliness of the hostess and the same happy outlook continued with the rest of the wait staff.

The menu was quite extensive.  A huge selection of sushi rolls, sashimi, appetizers and drinks!  We ordered way too much food, but I wanted to get a taste of a variety of items.

We started out with the Tempura Udon soup.  It was served with Tempura on the side.  Perfectly prepared and a bit different from the other Udon soups that we’ve tried since it was on the spicy side.  Perfect for the cold, rainy days.  The portion was quite large and filling.  Great for sharing.

Followed the soup with Grilled Yellow Tail Collar which truly was the most amazing part of the meal.  It was perfectly grilled and just melted in my mouth… served with Ponzu sauce.  I’d order it again in a heart beat.

And, of course, we couldn’t leave without trying some of their sushi – smelt eggs, water eel and avocado roll, spicy tuna.  Everything was fresh and delicious.  For a large chain, Kabuki is definitely a keeper. Next time, I’m in Old Pasadena and feel like sushi, I’ll be heading there.

Forgot to mention… they also have a Frequent Eater card. Where you get points for every dollar you spend there. Once you reach a certain number of points, Kabuki gives you a gift card. Not bad.

Have you tried Kabuki?  What do you think?
