Day 43: Pasadena Heavy Lifting Competition

Weight lifting challenge anyone?

Day 43 of 365 Things to do in Pasadena™ sends us to pump some iron!

This friendly competition was started about 6 years ago by those who worked out with all weight sizes at Villa-Parke Community Center. The weight lifting challenge grows and continues get more competitive each year, states recreation coordinator Bill Davis. Of course the event is all in the name of good fun and gathering the community together for a great time.

Those who are used to lifting 200 pounds or more can compete for trophies and prizes during the six annual bench press competition at Villa-Parke Community Center in Pasadena on Saturday, June 26th.

The challenge welcomes both male and female competitors ages 18 and over in five weight categories, with corresponding minimum starting lifts:

Lightweight (150 lbs. and under), 205 lbs.

Middleweight (151-180 lbs.), 245 lbs.

Light-Heavyweight (181-210 lbs), 285 lbs.

Heavyweight (211-235 lbs.), 325 lbs.

Super-Heavyweight (236 lbs. and above), 365 lbs.

This year, four students—one each from Pasadena, Blair, Marshall and Duarte High School—were selected to compete in the under-18 division!

Applications for the over 18 division are available at the Villa-Parke Community Center, 363 E. Villa Street.  Cost to compete is $10 per person for adults. Admission is free for those  viewing the competition. For additional information please contact Bill Davis at 626-744-6523.

This athletic event is sponsored by Max Muscle, Juice It Up, and  the city of Pasadena Human Services and Recreation Department.

Last year’s bench press winner in the super-heavyweight division was Ricky Pickens, pressing 550 pounds!

Who will take home the title and bragging rights from this years battle of the weights…Will it be one of our 365 things to do in Pasadena followers? We certainly hope so!

Are YOU or do you know anyone competing  this year? If so we would love to hear their story, we hope  you will share pictures with us too.

They are all winners in our book and the PasadenaViews team would like to wish all the athletes a fun and safe competition!
