DAY 296: The Crêpe Kitchen

Crepes in Italy - Murano Island
Sasha enjoying a crepe from a vendor in Italy (Murano Island)

We have a family tradition in our house – Saturday mornings mean Crêpes for Breakfast!  We love crepes – mostly because they’re such a vehicle for Nutella and bananas.  I swear… there’s absolutely nothing better than a Nutella Banana Crêpe!  Unless, of course, it’s a Caviar Sour Cream Crêpe – the Russian in me craves it at times.

Giant NutellaCrêpes are really not that difficult to make.  They require a little practice, a very hot crepe skillet and a flexible wrist.  The recipe is quite easy, not overly complicated and I can have hot and delicious Crêpes on the table in 10 to 15 minutes.  The recipe has been in my family for years.  And, the smiles and excitement, to this day, from all family members makes it all worth it.  All I have to do is yell – Crepes are ready!

So… where can you get crepes if you don’t feel like cooking.  Well… we used to go to IHOP.  They started serving Crêpes a few years ago.  They’re a little thicker than they should be, but still decent enough.  Recently, however, Crêperies started opening around us.  A crêperie may be a takeaway restaurant or stall, serving Crêpes as a form of fast food or street food, or may be a more formal sit-down restaurant or café per Wikipedia.

You can also visit a farmers market in South Pasadena on Thursday afternoons and check out The Crepe Kitchen where Yafit Barades, founder makes French Style Crêpe on the huge Crêpe maker with the round surface where she spreads the Crêpe batter, distributes it with a special wooden utensil and in a minute or so, you have a perfect Crêpe.  Voila!

Be prepared to wait in line.  Yafit has a following of loyal fans that do not mind a bit of a wait for a warm and yummy, appetizing treat.

Today ONLY, Groupon is offering a $5 for $10 worth of crêpes at The Crepe Kitchen.  Click here to get yours.
It’s a great way to try a Crêpe whether savory or sweet. Let me know what you think. And… if you’d like our family crêpe recipe, leave me your info in the comments below and I’ll email it to you.

Aahhhh… it’s Saturday morning… I’m off to make crêpes!  So… Day 296 of 365 Things To Do In Pasadena is dedicated to Crêpes!
