I think its safe to say that anyone who lives in Southern California knows that today is a day for celebration in the Mexican and Latino communities.
But do you know what it is that is celebrated on Cinco de Mayo?
Well lets start off day 357 of 365 Things To Do in Pasadena™ with a little history lesson.
No, it is NOT a celebration of Mexican Independence Day. Instead, Cinco de Mayo commemorates the Mexican Army’s victory over the French forces at the Battle of Puebla.
The victory is primarily celebrated in the state of Puebla and here in the U.S., over the years it has become a celebration of Mexican heritage and pride.
Mexicans and Latinos living in California during the American Civil War are credited with being the first to celebrate Cinco de Mayo in the U.S.
Ok now that we’ve had our history lesson, let the celebration begin! 😉
