Day 99: Pasadena Humane Society & SPCA

Hey Pasadena Pet lovers, are you looking for a furry new addition to your family?

We’ve got just the place for you to visit. Day of 365 things to do in Pasadena has us visiting  the Pasadena Humane Society.

Since their founding in 1903 every homeless animal in the area has been welcomed to the Pasadena Humane Society & SPCA. During the years, their loving and devoted staff has responded to the needs of animals and the community during times of difficulty and distress.

In 2009 alone, the staff provided care for 12,217 animals of various species both domestic and wild. Adoption counselors and rescue coordinators together placed 3,982 healthy animals in homes or other agencies that could enhance their adoption chances. When the Station Fires broke out in the late summer of last year, PHS was able to provide shelter and care for 389 evacuated animals.  These facts are a direct result of of the day to day work done by dedicated volunteers and staff at PHS.

That’s not all they are doing! Amazing recovery stories happen everyday with the help of PHS.

On June 13,2009 Mike Outhouse, a retired Parole Unit Supervisor and loyal PHS volunteer, suffered from a heart attack. After just 2 weeks of rest, Mike was anxious to get back to volunteering. Upon his return, Mike was given an article about a Wyoming humane society that implemented a dog walking program for for recovering heart attack patients. Inspired, Mike set out to develop a similar program to benefit fellow patients and dogs waiting for adoption at PHS.

Thanks to Mike’s efforts the Pasadena Humane Society & SPCA and Huntington Hospital have partnered to develop the Step Up:to Cardiac Health Program. The program allows patients in Huntington Hospital’s Cardiac Rehabilitation Program to walk select dogs around Central Park, just north of the animal shelter. This enables both recovering patients and the shelter dogs an opportunity to provide one another with companionship and exercise. In just a few weeks, Step Up: to Cardiac Health enrolled 10 participants!

Mike’s special dedication to helping both people and animals makes him a community hero! Thank you Mike and all the PHS staff and volunteers for the wonderful work you do!
