Named after a Greek mountainous region, Arcadia, is a city located in Los Angeles, California. On a smaller scale, Arcadia is part of the San Gabriel Valley, which consists of many cities such as Temple City, Rosemead, San Marino, Monterey Park, and San Gabriel. Arcadia has a relatively large population of 56,364. Of that population, 33,353 of them are of Asian ethnicity, according to the 2010 United States Census.

The Los Angeles County Arboretum and Botanic Garden is located in Arcadia right across the street from the popular Westfield Santa Anita shopping mall. Its gardens consist of plants categorized by their geographical origin. Aside from the botanic gardens, the Arboretum contains the Queen Ann Cottage, which is said to be haunted. There are some visitors who claim to have seen “the ghost of Lucky Baldwin,” the original purchaser of the area. Santa Anita Racetrack – 4 stars – See reviews on Yelp! Additionally, Arcadia is home to the oldest racetrack in Southern California: the Santa Anita Park Racetrack. Since its opening in 1934, this racetrack has had a range of historical events take place. One shocking historic event, most prominently known by locals, would have to be that Santa Anita, under temporary suspension throughout World War II, was used as a Japanese American internment camp.

Cal Phil’s Festival on the Green at the Arboretum – 5 stars – See reviews on Yelp! Bring your own blankets/lawn seats to enjoy the summer evenings while listening to a live orchestra. You can always rent a lawn seat when you get there to avoid the hassle of bringing your own. They do allow food, so I encourage you to buy a picnic variety basket from Whole Foods in the Deli section and a nice bottle of wine to enjoy with your date/s. They do have a dining options where you can pre-order meals from Bristol Farms, Dog Haus, Kings Row Gastropub, Robin’s Wood Fire BBQ, and the Philharmonic Fountain, two weeks to twenty-four hours prior to your concert date. Westfield Santa Anita Shopping Mall – 3 ½ stars – 123 reviews on Yelp! The Santa Anita shopping mall is always expanding. Recently, the outdoor Promenade is the new addition to the indoor mall. There are a wide variety of restaurants like the Cheescake Factory, Woodranch, California Pizza Kitchen, Bar Louie, Toyko Table along with a large food court. They even have a carousel, play area for children, nail salon, and seasonal holiday guests like Santa Clause and the Easter Bunny on special occasions! 🙂
