Day 78: Breakfast at Marston’s

Marston's Restaurant in PasadenaThe facade is so simple that it’s so easy to miss, and the structure is so humble that you’d be willing to dismiss it as nothing more than a misplaced tiny cottage built within the concrete jungle of Pasadena.

And yet insde this restaurant, big flavors and hearty laughs are celebrated.

… writes Bella C. poetically about Marston’s. Bella is not alone in her adoration of Marston’s which bills itself as being known for its legendary breakfasts and lunches.

Day 78 of 365 Things To Do In Pasadena™ is dedicated to trying as many items on their menu as possible… (Thank god I have helpers or I will never survive this year in the same wardrobe!)

First tip, get there early!  We arrived at 9 am and had a choice of several tables inside.  The outdoor patio tables were all taken.  By 9:30 am, a line started to form and a sign up sheet went up on a little table in front of the patio.  By 10 am, there must have been at least 20 people waiting… and that’s on a weekday!

Second tip… breakfast ends at 11 am.  This place is not for late sleepers!

The breakfast menu was quite extensive with plenty of omelets and different variations of pancakes.  We tried their “Fantastic French Toast” dipped in egg batter and rolled in corn flakes – definitely a hit!  Corn flakes soak up a lot of oil though so it’s not for the dieters, but loved the crunch and crispiness.

Macadamia Nut Pancakes were awesome!  Pieces of macadamia nuts both inside and on top of the pancakes served with real Vermont maple syrup.

And, of course, we had to try their bacon and eggs – scrambled eggs were nicely cooked, the bacon wasn’t as crispy as I would have liked, but still fine and the home fried potatoes were accented with peppers and onions…

So… if you’re looking for a breakfast spot in Pasadena that is a bit more upscale than Pie ‘N Burger, definitely try Marston‘s out.  It has something for everyone.
