Day 177: Pilates

For a sculpted, toned look, Pilates seems to be the exercise of choice.  Day 177 of 365 Things To Do In Pasadena takes us to Pro Fitness Network again for a look at their Pilates studio.

The Pilates method is an exercise system focused on improving flexibility, strength and body awareness without building muscle bulk.  It is based on a series of controlled movements performed on specially designed spring-resistant exercise machines or on the floor (called Mat Pilates.)  The program works from the core of your body outward. The core of your body focuses on your abdominal muscles as well as your back muscles. The idea behind Pilates is that if your core abdominal muscles are strong and tone, the rest of your body will be able to follow their lead.

It was created in the 1920s by the physical trainer Joseph Pilates (1880-1967) for the purpose of rehabilitation. Some of the first people treated by Pilates were soldiers returning from war and dancers such as Martha Graham and George Balanchine (to strengthen their bodies and heal their aches and pains).  Joseph himself was very frail as a child.  He had asthma in addition to other conditions.  To build his body and grow stronger, he took up several different sports, eventually becoming an accomplished athlete.
