Day 222: Get Your Clubs and Let’s Play Golf

I love playing golf.  There are two great golf courses just minutes from my home in Altadena.  And, I thought that it would be great to highlight them for our day 222 of 365 Things To Do Around Pasadena™.  🙂

Welcome to Altadena Golf Course

The best kept secret of the the Foothills are the two beautiful regulation golf courses hidden just North of Pasadena.  The two golf courses, Altadena Golf Course and Eaton Canyon Golf Course, are nine-holes, but don’t be fooled by the short yardage.  There are few long holes that can be challenging.

Originally opened as a 18-hole golf course and a private country club in 1910, Altadena Golf Course was sold in 1945 due to the financial problem faced by the club during the Great Depression.

Later, the county took the 60 acres of land and re-developed a par 36, 3000 yard nine-hole course.  This course is a joyful place to hang out. You hardly see a soul playing in the morning.  So I can pick up my clubs in the morning, play a quick round, get home, and zoom down to my Pasadena Views Real Estate Team office.  What a wonderful life!

The first hole has wide open fairway, and pretty straight down to the green.  But “look out” because it’s fast once you get on the green.
The second hole is a par 3.  To your left, there is a tall tree with many branches.  Often, the tree gets in your way because the pin location seems to be  right behind the tree.  Try to avoid the tree too much and you can land into the right bunker in front of the green.

Once you finish the two holes, you start walking towards the San Gabriel Mountains.  I can’t tell you how gorgeous it is to tee off towards this magnificent view.  It’s breathtaking on a clear day, and a treat to see when snow starts to cover the mountains.

Eaton Canyon Golf Course was designed as a 18 hole course.  It eventually operated as a 9 hole course.  The course was designed by Bill Bell Jr. in 1962.  I think there are more trees at this course, and a bit harder with narrower fairways surrounded by tall trees.  There is an incline that can be tough hitting towards the green.

Both courses offer fun and exciting golf play for all levels.  Open 365 days and has a restaurant, golf shop, and bar for your favorite drink (nice cold beer sounds good) after the play.  Special events and tournaments can be arranged.  There are women’s, men’s and senior golf clubs at both courses.

Happy teeing off, and go have fun at the two courses.  I know I will!
