"SoPasadena"

As you can see for Elementary Schools the district is divided in three parts. The dividing line is Fair Oaks Avenue.

If you live EAST of Fair Oaks Avenue, your home school is Marengo Elementary. WEST, your home school is Arroyo Vista Elementary and If you live in the SOUTH WEST region below Huntington Drive and west of Fremont your home school is Monterey Hills Elementary.

South Pasadena has one middle school and one high school. Everyone shares South Pasadena Middle School and for high school South Pasadena High. Both schools are centrally located off of Fair Oaks Avenue (a major street through South Pasadena.)

South Pasadena is known as an open enrollment district, meaning that you must enroll your children in your home school , but if you would like them to attend a different elementary school you may register for a lottery for your child to attend the school of your choice.

If there are openings at the South Pasadena school of your choice, that is not your home school, then a random lottery will be held for the open positions. Keep in mind that there is not always availability. Also siblings may be separated if you are trying to enroll them in a school that is not your home school.

Also, if there are a large number of students that are registering for a grade at a particular school, the overflow may go to a different elementary school than the home school that is intended for them. The best suggestion to ensure that your child/children get into the school of your choice would be to register at he home school designated to you on the first day available .

Monterey Hills Elementary and Arroyo Vista Elementary are both California Distinguished Schools.

In California an “achievement gap” exists among student subgroups. The California Dept. of Education and the State Superintendent of Public Works are making closing the achievement gap a top priorty.

The California Distinguished School Award identifies and honors those school that have demonstrated educational excellence for its students and their progress in narrowing the achievement gap. In order to apply for the Distinguished School honors a variety of eligibility criteria must be met which include designated federal and state accountabilty measures based on the No Child Left Behind, Adequate Yearly Progress and the Academic Performance Index requirements.
